Michael Faraday was an English chemist and physicist who contributed to the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. Faraday was the first and foremost Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, a position to which he was appointed for life.

Apprenticed to a book binder but devoted his spare time to science. He was engaged by Sir Humphry Davy as his assistant at the Royal Institution and visted the continent with Davy. In 1827 Faraday succeeded Davy at the Royal Institution and he was made D. C. L. 1832. He carried out a large number of researches of the highest class and made numerous discoveries of cardinal importance. He discovered induced electricity 1831, electrotonic state of matter 1831, equivalents in electro-chemical decompostion 1834, etc. F. R. S. 1824.
