Organized in 1889 under the auspices of St. Peter's Episcopal Church; first hospital in the U.S. built and operated exclusively for African Americans; began operation in 1891; in 1960 the Episcopal Church gave the hospital to the city of Charlotte, N.C.; later name: Charlotte Community Hospital (closed 1982).
