Howard Alexander Smith (b. Jan. 30, 1880, N.Y.C.-d. Oct. 27, 1966, Princeton, N.J.), U.S. Senator from New Jersey, graduated from Princeton University and the Columbia University law school. After practicing law in Colorado he served in the U.S. Food Administration during World War I. He was executive secretary of Princeton and a politics lecturer during the 1920s. In 1944 he was elected as a Republican to the Senate, serving until 1959.

H. Alexander Smith served as the executive secretary of Princeton University and was later elected to the United States Senate representing New Jersey.
Smith made contributions to United States foreign policy while serving on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He worked as a lawyer and for Princeton University before serving as treasurer and was eventually elected chairman of the New Jersey State Republican Committe. He went on to represent New Jersey in the United States Senate from 1944-1958. While in the Senate, Smith served as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee and the Education and Labor Comittee. Smith chose not to seek relection in 1958 and instead accepted John Foster Dulles' offer to serve as Special Consultant on Foreign Affairs to the Secretary of State.
