Biographical History

Community and civil rights activist Ruth M. Batson was born and raised in Boston, Mass. From 1963 to 1966 she was the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. Batson was the first woman to serve as president of the New England Regional Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and was the founder and director (1966-1969) of Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO), a voluntary school desegregation program exchanging students between urban and suburban areas. She was an associate professor of psychiatry at the Boston University School of Medicine (1970-1986), and president and executive director of the Museum of Afro-American History (1985-1988) in Boston. In 1969 she founded the Ruth M. Batson Educational Foundation, which provides grants to African American students, educational institutions, and community organizations.
