Biographical History

Landscape architect. Educated at Harvard: A.B. 1920, M.L.A. 1923. Charles William Eliot II was the son of Samuel Atkins Eliot and the grandson of Charles William Eliot, president of Harvard from 1869 to 1909.

Charles William Eliot (1899- ) served with other Harvard men in the American Red Cross Ambulance unit, Section I, in Bassano, Italy in 1918. He earned his Harvard AB 1920 and became a planner and landscape architect. He went on to become a professor in the Graduate School of Design. His grandfather served as President of Harvard University.

Charles William Eliot II (1899-1993) graduated from Harvard College in 1920 and earned a master's of landscape architecture from Harvard in 1923. He served as director of the National Resources Planning Board, a part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, from 1939 to 1943. Mr. Eliot also held the Charles Eliot Professorship in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning (named after his uncle) at the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1955 to 1959, at which point he became Professor of City and Regional Planning until 1967.
