Biographical History
In 1899, Christiana J., Lady Herringham translated Libro dell'Arte by Cennino Cennini, who had written during the 15th century about painting techniques. This translation revived interest in the use of egg tempera paint, and The Society of Painters in Tempera was founded in 1901. Between 1901 and 1954, the society published four volumes of papers. For awhile, the organization changed its name to Society of Mural Decorators and Painters in Tempera. Eventually, the society went into decline but was revitalized in 1997, when the name was changed to Society of Tempera Painters. Rosamund Borradaile was the society's honorary secretary in the early 1960s. She was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and wrote about art. Robert Feller was associated with the National Gallery of Art and wrote about art conservation.
