Biographical History
Exner, translator, critic, essayist, poet and UCSB faculty member for 25 years, retired in 1991. He is an acknowledged expert on Hugo von Hofmannstal, Austrian poet, dramatist and essayist.
Biography
Richard Exner is a Professor Emeritus of German Literature, specializing in Hugo von Hofmannsthal, a 20th century poetry. He was born in Niedersachswerfen, Germany. He came to the United States to attend the University of Southern California, from which he received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He taught at University of Rochester, Princeton University, and Oberlin College before coming to UCSB in 1965, where he taught classes in German and comparative literature. Academically, he was distinguished for his work as a translator and a poet. During his tenure at UCSB, he was awarded both Fulbright research grants and a Guggenheim fellowships. In 1982 he was awarded the Alma Johanna Koenig Prize for literary excellence for his poem "Nach Auschwitz" and was elected to the P.E.N. Club, a World Association of Writers. He retired from teaching in 1992.
