Martha Jean Wren Gaines, human rights and civil liberties activist, was born 20 May 1939 in Thomson, Georgia, and died 29 November 1987 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Gaines was a partner in a consulting firm, Gaines and Roth-White (1973-1977) dedicated to feminist interests and went on to work as a compliance officer for Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit System (1977-1987). She also worked with and held leadership positions in many local, regional, and national organizations dedicated to the cause of human rights and civil liberties including the National Organization for Women and American Civil Liberties Union. An ardent supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment, she was involved on the state and national level. In addition to being an active supporter and consultant for the campaigns of several elected officials, she also mounted an unsuccessful campaign to be elected to the Georgia Senate (1974).
