Biographical History
UAW Local 1551 was chartered in 1968 to represent 1100 employees at the W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa. The local went on strike in 1971 and again in 1974. The latter strike began in November 1974 over a lockout, but ended briefly when a contract extension was signed. Local 1551 struck again in December 1974 when the contract expired. The company and the union both filed petitions with the National Labor Relations Board. Sheaffer alleged picketline violence and the union charged the company with unfair labor practices. The clippings run until March 1975, though the strike was not settled until late Spring 1975.
