Biographical History

Julia Alleman Caine, 1900-1976, was a highly respected Social Studies, American History, Development of Civilization and Religion professor at Brigham Young High School, 1940-1965. Julia Dorothea Alleman was born 27 February 1900 in Springville, Utah, to Charles Albert Alleman and Hannah Dorthea Andersen Hansen Alleman. She received her teaching certificate, bachelor's, and master's degrees from BYU. She studied History (U.S., Western, World) and Education, and took minors in Speech and Geology. Julia married Charles Avery Caine 25 June 1933, and continued to learn and teach until her retirement in 1965. Because of Julia A. Caine, the young people in Utah schools were able to receive a better background in the study of economics. Beginning in the summer of 1953, selected Utah educators were given scholarships to attend a three-week BYU Economic Education Workshop to learn more about the field of economics. The workshop was held annually from 1953 to 1966, Julia Caine serving as the Assistant Director of the workshop for several years. During workshop sessions teachers developed projects, unit teaching plans, and resource units which they could use in the schools. She was a prominent member of the American Association of University Women and served as local and state presidents. Julia died 29 February 1976 in Provo, Utah, after a long illness. She is buried near her husband, Avery, who survived her one year.
