Biographical History

Isabella Beecher Hooker proposed formation of the Meriden Political Equality Club on May 24, 1889, at a lecture by Mary Seymour Howell on the "Dawning of the 19th Century." At a meeting on June 3, some thirty men and women organized a club for the "study of political science." Officers were elected and a constitution was drawn up, the primary object of the club being "to procure the right of suffrage for women."
