Biographical History

The Christian Life Commission is a Southern Baptist Convention agency that provides scriptural analysis on current social issues and moral responsibilities of the Christian life. Housed in the Southern Baptist Convention Building in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1947 the Commission succeeded the Social Services Commision that started in 1913. In 1997, the Christian Life Commission was renamed the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission to describe its focus on religious liberty and church/state relations.

The Christian Life Commission is an agency of the Southern Baptist Convention with the assigned task of helping churches become aware of the "ethical implications of the Christian gospel." Acker C. (A.C.) Miller took over as Executive Secretary of the newly renamed Christian Life Commission in 1953, and served until his retirement in 1960. Race relations was prominent in the Commission's work during Miller's tenure, although it also addressed a wide-range of social issues including family life, alcohol, labor relations, and peace through publications and conferences. The Christian Life Commission was renamed the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and assumed the added ministry assignment dealing with religious liberty and church-state issues.
