Biographical History
Member of the Continental Congress.
Samuel Caldwell Meredith was born in Pennsylvania to John Wheeler and Elizabeth (Busbey) Meredith. Samuel married Margaret Ballard in 1829 and they had two children, a son William and a daughter Emily. Emily married Edward Willis Nicholson and their son Meredith Nicholson became a leader in creating the Golden Age of literature in Indiana during the first quarter of the twentieth century. Samuel was an early Centerville, Indiana settler. He served as an editor and publisher of the local newspaper there. He joined the Gold Rush to California in 1849 and returned to Indiana in 1852 to establish a home in Indianapolis where he resided for the remainder of his life. He died on 9 February 1899.
