Biographical History
The General College of Louisiana State University was established in 1974 to coordinate activities related to admission, testing, financial aid, counseling, and career opportunities for students; coordinate support services offered to academic departments; and provide programs of study to students requiring an undergraduate curriculum too broad to be assigned to a single school or college. It initially was composed of six divisions: Junior Division, Office of the Registrar, University College, Office of High School Relations, Office of Student Aid & Scholarships, and Institute for Environmental Studies. The University College had been created in 1951 to provide college educational opportunities to non-traditional students through Saturday and evening classes and provide continuing education for professionals. The General College became the Center for Advising and Counseling within the University College in 2000.
