Biographical History
The Laboratory of Anthropology, Inc., was created in 1927 with support from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Since its opening in 1931, the mission of the Laboratory has been archaeological and anthropological research, education (field schools), publication, collection, and the promotion of the arts and welfare of Indian communities. In 1948 the Lab became a unit of the Museum of New Mexico, dropping the "Inc." from its title. Another name change occurred in 1984 when, with the undertaking of a separate facility for its collections and exhibitions, the institution became formally known as the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology.
