Biographical History
West Point, N.Y., was originally utilized as a strategic defense location during the American Revolution. West Point is geographically located on a 100 ft. plateau overlooking the Hudson River. After the American victory Congress created a Corps of Invalids (veterans) that were transferred to West Point for the purpose of instructing candidates for commission. In 1802 Congress legally established the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Academy produced many leaders of American forces, especially during the Civil War, when the majority of Union and Confederate generals were West Point graduates.
George Armstrong Custer was a famous cavalry officer during the Civil War and the Indian wars of the 1860s and 1870s. Elizabeth Bacon Custer, his wife, was the author of several works about Army life on the plains. After the death of her husband, she dedicated her life to defending his honor.
From its founding in 1802 until 1812, the Military Academy was under the supervision of the Secretary of War. In the latter year it was placed under the Chief of Engineers who had charge of it until 1866 when the supervision of the Academy was again transferred to the Secretary of War, under such officer or officers as he might assign. The Secretary appointed an Inspector of the Military Academy.
The United States Military Academy was officially organized in 1802 and located on the military post at West Point, an important fortification on the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War. The Academy now has a four-year course of study leading to a bachelor of science degree and a commission in the Army.
