Biographical History

Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy.

Daniel Edward Barbey graduated from the Naval Academy in 1912. He served on cruisers and destroyers in the years before World War I, and in January 1919 was assigned to the Naval Base at Cardiff, Wales. He served at U.S. Naval Headquarters in London and later was Naval Port Officer, Constantinople, Turkey and as an aide on the staff of Rear Admiral Mark L. Bristol, Commander U.S. Naval Detachment in Turkish Waters and High Commissioner to Turkey. Before World War II, he commanded several ships and Destroyer Division 17. Promoted to Captain in February 1940, he took command of the battleship New York. Advanced to the rank of Rear Admiral in June 1942, he organized and became head of the Navy's first Amphibious Warfare Section and engaged in developing and evaluating designs for landing craft. From 1943 to 1945 he commanded the Seventh Amphibious Force. Following the war, Barbey was Commandant of the 13th Naval District. He was transferred to the retired list on 30 June 1951 and died in Bremerton, Washington on 11 March 1969.
