Biographical History

Mrs. Orene Farese was raised in Mississippi. She attended Holmes Junior College and Blue Mountain College in the 1930s, during which time she married John Farese. She became interested in politics through her work as a teacher. In 1952, she was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives. The Fareses were the first married couple to serve in the same legislative body in the United States. She served a term in the Mississippi Senate before her defeat in 1956 over her racially-liberal ideas.
