Biographical History
Deborah Willis (1948-), African American photographer and photographic historian.
Deborah Willis is an historian of photography, a curator, and a photographer. For more than 20 years she has been a leading scholar in the investigation and recovery of the rich legacy of African-American photography. She is former Associate Director for Research and Collections at the Smithsonian's Center for African American History & Culture, and curator of Photographs and Prints Division at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Willis is the author of several books including "Imagining Families," "Black Photographers: 1840 to the Present," "Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers, 1840 to the Present," and "The Black Female Body: A Photographic History." Her publications on the history of black photography have become the foundation for scholarly work in the field. In recognition of a quarter-century of documenting the black experience in photography, she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow in 2000.
