Biographical History

Born June 4, 1913, in Fond du Lac, WI, to Frank and Martha Broderick, Robert Carlton Broderick received his BA and MA degrees in English from St. Francis Seminary of Milwaukee, WI, in 1935 and 1939, respectively. On July 3, 1941, he married Virginia Joanne Gaertner, a Catholic artist. From 1936 to 1943 Broderick served as fiction editor of the Bruce Publishing Company of Milwaukee, WI, before becoming the managing editor of the Church Property Administration Magazine in 1944. From 1944 until his death in 1991 he worked as a freelance writer and published more than 25 works, most on topics pertaining to the Catholic Church. His best known work is "The Catholic Encyclopedia" on which he collaborated with his wife Virginia. In addition to his literary work, Robert Broderick was invoved in a number of social and religious causes including serving on the Board of Directors of the Holy Name Union (1937-1947); as president of the Catholic Interracial Council of Milwaukee (1959-1963); and as president of the Milwaukee Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men (1971-1977).
