Biographical History

Captain A.H. Sorensen was born in Denmark and began his seafaring career at age 6. He appeared in San Francisco around 1890 and worked from local ports for the remainder of his life until 1938. Employment on various vessels include the Queen (schooner), the Ida Snow (schooner), the Snow & Burgess (schooner), and the California (built 1911, steam schooner), owned by the California Whaling Company, San Francisco, California. He drowned in the Alameda Estuary in 1938 where his body was found floating at the foot of Ninth Avenue. It is believed he lost his footing and fell into the water while boarding the Barbara C (schooner). He was employed as a night watchman on the lumber schooner Barbara C. at the time.
