Biographical History

C. Lee Campbell (1953-1999) earned his Bachelor of Science (1974) and Master of Science (1976) degrees in plant pathology at Colorado State University. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1978, Dr. Campbell became an assistant professor of plant pathology at North Carolina State University in 1979. He was promoted to associate professor in 1985 and to professor in 1991. Dr. Campbell was an internationally respected scientist and an important figure in plant pathology. He worked at North Carolina State University from 1979 to 1999.

Dr. Campbell introduced new and rigorous approaches for ecological studies of soilborne and foliage pathogens and the epidemiology of related diseases. As a pioneer leader in the quantitative epidemiology of plant diseases, he specialized in root diseases.

Dr. Campbell was dedicated to the service of plant pathology and the American Phytopathological Society. He served as Secretary-Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the Southern Division of American Phytopathological Society and Vice-President, President-Elect, and President of American Phytopathological Society from 1997 to 1998, one of the youngest scientists to ever hold that office. Additionally, he was Editor-in-Chief of (Phytopathology News) from 1990 to 1995 and served on many American Phytopathological Society committees. He also contributed to his chosen discipline through his unyielding involvement in graduate and undergraduate academic programs at North Carolina State University.
