Biographical History

Anspach was born in Fremont (Ohio) on March 5, 1895. He attended Ashland Academy, 1909-1912, and earned a B.A. degree from Ashland College (1919). Later, he earned additional degrees. Aspach worked as registrar of Ashland College, 1923-1928, and Dean of the College, 1926-1930. In 1930 he became Head of the Dept. of Education, Eastern Michigan University. Anspach was named Dean of Administration (1934). He returned to Ashland College to serve as president, 1935-1936. On July 1, 1939 Anspach became CMU's fifth president. He retired in 1959, having permanently influenced the development of CMU. Anspach was a popular speaker and writer. Several collections of his speeches, papers as president, and his books are at the Clarke Historical Library. He died on Oct. 25, 1977 at age 82. (For further information see the finding aid.).
