Biographical History
Berea students, faculty, and staff, along with many others had previously participated in a 1964 march on the state capitol in Frankfort to lobby the Kentucky legislature to pass civil rights legislation. Then on March 9, 1965, a small group of Bereans took part in a King-led march that had to turn back before arriving at Montgomery and during which a white minister from Boston was killed. The subsequent four-day march of March 21 -- 24 drew more than 25,000 participants. Fifty-eight Berea College students and faculty members participated, the largest contingent of all Kentucky colleges and universities.
