Biographical History

Berea students, faculty, and staff, along with many others had previously participated in a 1964 march on the state capitol in Frankfort to lobby the Kentucky legislature to pass civil rights legislation. Then on March 9, 1965, a small group of Bereans took part in a King-led march that had to turn back before arriving at Montgomery and during which a white minister from Boston was killed. The subsequent four-day march of March 21 -- 24 drew more than 25,000 participants. Fifty-eight Berea College students and faculty members participated, the largest contingent of all Kentucky colleges and universities.

From the description of Berea College Selma to Montgomery oral history collection by Dr. Dwayne Mack and Brittney Westbrook. (Berea College). WorldCat record id: 269452868
