Biographical History

In 1855 the Victorian Institute for the Advancement of Science and the Philosophical Society of Victoria (both founded 1854) combined to form the Philosophical Institute of Victoria, subsequently renamed the Royal Society of Victoria. Its most famous undertaking was the Burke and Wills expedition of 1860-1861.
