Claude Birkett Ferenbaugh (1899-1975) was born in Dresden, New York. After graduating from West Point in 1919, he commissioned in the infantry. He graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1937 and the Army War College in 1940. He served at the War Department General Staff from 1941 to 1942. He became chief of staff for operations at I Corps, North African Theater of Operations in 1942. He served again at the War Department General Staff from 1943 to 1944. He made brigadier general in May 1944 and became assistant division commander of the 83rd Division. He was commander of the Military District of Washington from 1945 to 1948. His postwar assignments included commanding general of the 5th Armored Division, from 1950 to 1951, and 7th Infantry Division in 1951. From December 1954 until his retirement as lieutenant general in September 1955, he served as deputy commanding general of the Eighth Army. He received two Distinguished Service Medals, two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit and two Bronze Stars.
