Biographical History

Indiana University alumnus and administrator.

U.H. Smith was born near Bloomington, Ind. to Dudley F. and Sally Blakenship Smith. Smith earned an A.B. in Pedagogics at Indiana University in 1893. Prior to and after his attendance at I.U., Smith taught in the Monroe County, Ind. schools and from 1893-97 he taught mathematics in Anderson, Ind. He was also the founder, editor, and publisher of the Whitehorn News in Whitehorn, Colo. In 1899 Smith began his long professional career at Indiana University when he accepted a position as Assistant Registrar. He held several positions at I.U., but the most prominent was his tenure as Bursar, 1908-36. He retired in 1937 and was granted the title of Bursar Emeritus. He passed away April 21, 1953.

Ulysses Howe Smith was born near Bloomington, IN January 11, 1865 to Dudley F. and Sally (Blankenship) Smith. From 1883-84 he attended Eureka College in Illinois and then in 1888 he entered Indiana University. Smith earned an AB in Pedagogics in 1893 and later did one year of graduate work, also at IU. While an undergraduate at IU, he was joint editor and business manager of the monthly Indiana Student (now the Indiana Daily Student).

Prior to and after attendance at IU, Smith taught in the Monroe County schools and from 1893-97 he taught mathematics in Anderson, Indiana. He was also the founder, editor, and publisher of the Whitehorn News in Whitehorn, Colorado.
