Biographical History

Teacher and Civil War soldier.

Born in Ilbesheim, Germany on July 27, 1829, Saeltzer was trained and certified as a teacher for the Kirchheimbolanden region. He came to the United States around 1855 or 1856, and settled in Mansfield, Ohio, where he was certified to teach in that state for the years 1857-1862. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen on Feb. 26, 1862. During the Civil War, between 1862 and 1865, he served as an officer of the 10th Ohio Cavalry Regiment in Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Virginia.
