Biographical History
Theodore Henry Hinchman was born in Morris County, New Jersey on March 6, 1818. He worked as a clerk in New York for five years before moving to Detroit in 1836 at the age of eighteen. There he went into the drug and grocery business, and married Louisa Chapin, the daughter of one of his employers, Dr. Marshal Chapin. In 1844 he became a partner in the firm. He continued in business in Detroit for over half a century, achieving wealth and civic and business prominence and leadership. He was president of Merchants' & Manufacturers' Bank, Sewer Commissioner and State Senator from 1877-1878, and a member of the Semi-centennial Commission in 1886. Thomas H. Hinchman died in died in Detroit on May 12, 1895; and his wife died in 1907.
