Biographical History

The Heywood family members represented in this collection are Benjamin Heywood (1746-1816), Benjamin Franklin Heywood (1792-1869), and Benjamin Heywood (1821-1860). Benjamin Heywood 1st was employed much as an arbitrator, executor, assessor, and guardian and was a magistrate in Worcester, Mass. He was appointed judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1802 and was also for a time a partner in a liquor business. Benjamin Heywood 1st was commissioned a lieutenant in the Continental Army in 1775, was promoted to captain in 1776, and served as paymaster. General Washington appointed him to soldiers' pay and the accounts of Mass., army officers. Captain Heywood remained for several years after the war in the office of General Superintendent. His son and grandson, Benjamin Franklin Heywood and Benjamin Heywood, were physicians in Worcester for many years.
