Biographical History
By the time of his death in 1881, John Gould was the most acclaimed publisher of illustrated orinthology in Europe. Hummingbirds were his favorite species. To capture on paper the bright iridescent color of the plumage, Gould developed a special forumla of oils and color over gold leaf.
Gould was an ornithologist.
Ornithologist. Following his first visit to Australia in 1838, Gould began publication in England of "The birds of Australia" in 36 parts. A supplementary volume was published in 1869.
Ornithologist. Publisher of several volumes of the paintings of birds, including The Birds of Australia.
