Biographical History

German organist and composer.

Middelschulte studied with August Knabe in Soest, and August Loeschhorn and August Haupt at the Royal Academic Institute for Church Music in Berlin, and in 1891, he moved to Chicago to become Organist and Director of Music at Holy Name Cathedral. Following his recitals at the Columbian Exposition of 1893, Theodore Thomas invited him to play with his Chicago Orchestra, which later became the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Middelschulte held the position of organist there from 1896-1916. Middleschulte's organ compositions were greatly influenced by the theories of Bernard Ziehn, with whom he studied in Chicago, in particular Ziehn's "symmetric inversion" of the chromatic scale to produce a distinct harmonic language.

From the description of Cadenza for Sonata No. I (Finale) Guilmant / by Wilhelm Middelschulte. [between 1917 and 1936?] (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 46940835
