Biographical History

After her husband, apothecary Ebeneezer Campbell, died in the mid-1750s leaving Christiana with two young daughters, she opened a tavern in Williamsburg to support her family. Keeping a tavern was a trade Mrs. Campbell had learned from her father. The tavern was frequented by gentlemen such as George Washington and members of the Williamsburg Masonic Lodge. About the time the government moved to Richmond, Mrs. Campbell retired, though continued to live in Williamsburg. She eventually moved to Fredericksburg, where she died in 1792 at the age of 70.
