Biographical History
The National Center for Appropriate Technology was incorporated in the State of Montana in 1976. Its avowed goals were to research and develop new technologies for the benefit of low-income individuals and families and to educate these groups in the efficient use of technology and the reduction of energy consumption. A board of directors headquartered in Washington, D.C., led the company. A number of divisions were created under the auspices of research and development, including solar energy and economic development. In 1979, several employees attempted to organize a local union. In 1980, the National Labor Relations Board awarded the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) the right to call a vote for unionization. There is no record of the result.
