Biographical History

Thomas O. Larkin (1802-1858) was a merchant who settled in Monterey, California, who later became U.S. consul (1844-48) and served as a delegate to the California Constitutional Convention in 1849.

Thomas O. Larkin, early California pioneer, arrived in California in 1832. Became successful merchant, financier and land developer. In 1844, applied to Governor Micheltorena for naturalization of his three children, and for land grant in their names. Received a grant of land on west bank of Sacramento River. Known as Children's Rancho, Larkin's Rancho or Upper Farm.

Born in Massachusetts in 1802, Thomas O. Larkin came to California in 1832. There he established a retail store and traded successfully with Mexico and the Hawaiian islands. He served as U.S. consul at Monterey from 1844 to 1848, and he worked as a confidential agent of the U.S. State Department in promoting the independence of California from Mexico. He was a delegate to the California constitutional convention of 1849, a property owner in San Francisco, and a founder of the city of Benecia, Calif.
