The Division of Fish, Wildlife, and Marine Resources is responsible for managing the fish and wildlife of the state, largely under the mandate of Article 11 of the Environmental Conservation Law. Responsibilities include programs for licensing and educating those who hunt and fish; operating fish hatcheries and stocking lakes and streams; protecting fish and wildlife habitats; monitoring toxic contamination; ensuring wetlands protection; and reviewing hydropower development projects to assess their impact on fish and wildlife species and habitats. The Division, which was established in 1996, was preceeded by the Division of Fish and Wildlife.
