Biographical History
Dain was born Nov. 20, 1910. He earned an A.B. and a M.A., both in history and both from Wayne State University (WSU). During World War II he served as a communications officer in the U.S. Navy. Dain taught in Detroit Public Schools for 29 years and as a special instructor at WSU for 15 years. Dain was hired as an administrative assistant at Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University (CMU) in 1966. He later took a part-time position as an assistant professor and was eventually promoted to the rank of full professor. A fascinating lecturer, he was very popular with students. Dain retired from CMU in 1981. He received an honorary doctorate from CMU in 1996. Dain testified in the trial of the Children of the Chippewa ... versus the Regents of the UM in 1979 due to his knowledge of early Michigan education agreements with the tribes. Dain wrote a number of books, two of which won awards. Many of his books are in the CMU libraries. Dain died on Oct. 24, 1996 in Fayetteville (N.Y.). He was survived by his daughter, brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. (Information from the collection.).
