Biographical History
In Feb. 1968, Dr. Bernard Bucove resigned his post as Director of the Washington State Dept. of Health, a position he had held since 1955, to take the position of Health Services Administrator for the City of New York. His deputy, Dr. Wallace Lane, was appointed Acting Director while a nationwide search was conducted for a new director. Previous to his appointment, Dr. Lane headed the Community Health or Local Health Division of the Dept. of Health and served as Dr. Bucove's deputy. As Acting Director, Dr. Lane soon gained the confidence of Governor Daniel J. Evans. In Mar. 1969, Gov. Evans appointed Dr. Lane as Director of the Dept. of Health. In 1971 the Washington State Dept. of Health was combined into a new "super-agency," the new Dept. of Social and Health Services (DSHS). DSHS combined the functions of social services, public assistance, medical care, mental health services, adult corrections, and health care. Dr. Lane assumed the position of Director of the Health Services Division of the new Dept. In Jan. 1973, Dr. Lane left the agency.
