Biographical History
Whitworth College was founded officially on February 19, 1890. During the years 1987 and 1988 plans were made to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Of course, this celebration, all during the 1989 year, was an opportune time for a fund drive. (Timothy R. Eaton, B .A. ’74) was commissioned to produce a motion picture film, “Whitworth College” for promotion of the financial campaign. This file includes the many film clips used to make the film and the final product in various formats.
Since the moving of Whitworth College from Sumner and Tacoma to the J. P. Graves Estate in Spokane, Washington, many buildings and ancillary sites on the campus have come and gone. These are described, chiefly by photographs and snapshots, in this file. Pertinent references to architect’s drawings and to other files are included.
This file documents the stories of a number of individuals who have had a significant religious experience in Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church. Through oral interviews, a student investigator enrolled in the Whitworth University “Oral History of Spokane Churches” program, has attempted an understanding of how religious practice and experience has evolved in a particular church the Pacific Northwest. The results of Rachel Frazier's efforts are presented as a history of the church shown both in a photographic slide show and in a PowerPoint display.
From 1976 to the present Whitworth University has provided a week of theological reflection, personal renewal, and family enrichment for pastors and ministers. The Whitworth Institute of Ministry fosters new growth of skills and insights into the Christian ministry.
C. Davis Weyerhaeuser was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on October 22, 1909. He joined the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in 1933 and retired from active management in 1959. He became a trustee of Whitworth College in 1941, retiring from that Board in 1980. He was awarded a Honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Whitworth College. He died on April 27, 1999.
This file begins with extensive correspondence with Frank Warren, President of Whitworth College, with whom Weyerhaeuser had a warm personal relationship. It ends with letters to William P. Robinson, President of Whitworth University. Weyerhaeuser was a strong financial supporter of the college and provided thoughtful advice to Warren and succeeding administrators concerning the management of the college during some difficult times.
