Biographical History

Born in Spokane, Wash., Jane Dunning (later, Baldwin) was painting at the age of six. By the time she attended Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, she was also creating jewelry and block prints. While working for her bachelor's degree in art at Washington State College, her interest in art and the promoting of art led her to many leadership roles. After living in San Francisco for two and one half years, Jane returned to Spokane, where she married Warren Baldwin in 1936. She was active in the Spokane Art Association, and was frequently invited to judge area art exhibitions. In 1938, she became a charter board member of Spokane's Works Progress Administration (WPA) Art Center.
