Professional experience: Fellow and Lecturer, Trinity College (1914); Professor of Physics, Manchester University (1919-1937); Director of the National Physical Laboratory (1937-1938); Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics, Cambridge (1938-1953). Research interests: x-ray physics.
