Charles Berton Root (b. 1909, Madison, S.D.-d. Nov. 8, 1998), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from university and received his commission in 1931, and graduated from flying school in 1933. His early career included flight instructor and other squadron assignments. During World War II he became commanding officer, 504th Bomb Group of the 20th Air Force, in the Marianas. Moving to the Philippines in 1946, he served as chief of staff of the 313th Bomb Wing, then deputy chief of staff of the 13th Air Force. In 1955 General Root became deputy commander of the Northeast Air Command in Newfoundland. He retired in 1966.
