Biographical History
The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.
(Cont.) The New England and Savannah Steamship Company was incorporated in 1887. Reorganized from the financially unstable Boston and Savannah Steamship Company, its purpose was to "carry persons and property within and without Massachusetts." The Company owned, charteed, and managed steamships and other vessels and property.
(Cont.) The Ocean Steamship Company owned most of the capital stock of the New England and Savannah Steamship Company, and for financial reasons, the stockholders voted to surrender the Company's charter in 1913; the dissolution occurred on April 17, 1914.
