American illustrator born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1918. Has done illustrations for Life magazine and Collier's Encyclopedia.
Jean Day Zallinger was born in Boston in 1918. She attend the Massachusetts College of Art and the Yale School of Fine Arts from which she received her B.F.A. She has worked as a freelance illustrator and portrait painter from the late 1930s-early 1940s. She has illustrated over 75 books and has gained renown for her penciled renderings of animals. Jean Day Zallinger is a professor, designer, artist and illustrator of books for children. Awards include Junior Library Guild Award (1965, 1993), Western Writers Spur Award and International Board on Books award (1967, 1968), Outstanding Science Trade Book of the National Assn. of Science Teachers/Children's Book Council (6 times), the Library of Congress Children's Literary Center notable book (1990), and the Massachusetts College of Art istinguished Alumnus Award (1992).

Jean Day Zallinger was born in February 1918, in Boston, Mass . She attended the Massachusetts College of Art and received a B.F.A. from the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1942. She married Rudolph Franz Zallinger (also an artist) in 1941. She spent most of her career living in North Haven, Connecticut, and teaching at the Paier School of Art in Hamden, Connecticut . Mrs. Zallinger has illustrated numerous children's books, mainly non-fictional works about animals and plants, including such titles as Biography of a Leaf, Discovering What Earthworms Do, The Earliest Americans, and Sea Creatures Do Amazing Things.
