Biographical History

Dr. Launcelot Minor Blackford (1894-May 5, 1964) was born in Alexandria, Virginia, the son of L. Minor Blackford, a principal of Episcopal School, Alexandria and the grandson of Mary Beckeley Blackford, a Southern abolitionist, whose biography Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory was written by Dr. Blackford and was published by the Harvard University Press. Dr. Blackford attended the University of Virginia and graduated from its Medical School in 1923 and interned at John Hopkins and at Mayo's. He was an editor of and contributor to various medical journals and a member of a number of professional societies. Dr. Blackford served as a first lieutenant in France during World War I and for a time as a major in North Africa and Southern France in World War II. He was a pioneer among those interested in providing homes for elderly people.
