John H. Wheeler was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1871. He attended the College of St. Thomas (St. Paul), after which he worked in various architectural offices in the Twin Cities for 14 years, including seven years in the office of Clarence H. Johnston. In 1901-1902, Wheeler was in charge of the Building Inspection Department of St. Paul, and in 1902, he opened a private practice that he maintained for the rest of his life.
