Biographical History
The American writer Charles Plymell was born in Holcomb, Kansas, in 1935. During the 1960s he lived in San Francisco and was associated with the Beat writers Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. In 1966, Plymell married Pamela Beach, a relative of Sylvia Beach, the owner of the Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris and original publisher of Ulysses. In 1970 he received an M.A. degree from Johns Hopkins University. Plymell has been editor and publisher of Cherry Valley Editions, a small press in Cherry Valley, New York, since 1974. He has served as an instructor in English at a number of colleges and universities in Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland, and been involved in poets-in-the-schools programs in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, and New York. Since 1963 Plymell has published fourteen books with a variety of small presses as well as contributed to several anthologies and periodical publications.
