Bramblett, Agnes Cochran.

Agnes Cochran Bramblett (1886-1979), was a poet and Georgia's first female poet laureate. She was born in Summerville, Georgia, on October 3, 1886 to William David and Mary Elizabeth Goolsby Cochran. She married Augustus Walter Bramblett on June 14, 1908 and moved to Forsyth, Georgia. They had two children: Antoinette and Walter. Her first book of poetry was published in 1927, followed by five more books of poetry and a novel, My Brother, Oh My Brother. Bramblett taught Sunday School at the Forsyth Methodist Church and much of her poetry reflects this interest in religion. Bramblett helped to establish Georgia Poetry Day in 1948, chairing Georgia's first celebration of the annual event. She was appointed Georgia's poet laureate in 1963, a distinction she held until 1973. In 1971 she received an honorary doctorate in literature from Tift College. She was a member of the League of American Penwomen, the Georgia Writers Club, the Georgia Writers Association, the Dixie Council of Authors and Journalists and the Atlanta Writers Club.
