Biographical History
Joseph Hochstein was a Jewish educator, scholar and lecturer. Hochstein was born in New York City in 1898, and taught foreign languages to students at several New York City public high schools. Hochstein studied the revival of Jewish life in the Spanish-speaking world, and lectured on the subject at conferences, synagogues, and several universities. He wrote for publications in several languages, and served as the first correspondent in Cuba for Der Tag, the Yiddish-language newspaper. Hochstein formed the Pan-American Student League of New York in 1931, creating a network of over 75 clubs across New York City public high schools that fostered ties with the Spanish language and culture of Latin America. He also worked for the American Jewish Committee's Latin American desk, writing and publishing newspapers for the Jewish communities of Latin America.
