Biographical History

Richard Austin Rice (1846-1936) was born in Madison, Conn., and graduated from Yale with an A.B. degree in 1868 and a B.D. degree from the Divinity School in 1872. He worked as professor of Modern Languages at the University of Vermont, 1875-1881, before joining the faculty of Williams College, also as professor of Modern Languages. He became involved with the Williams College Art Association ca. 1885, and by 1903 had been appointed professor of the History of Art and Civilization. Upon his retirement from Williams in 1911, Rice accepted a position as Chief of the Division of Prints at the Library of Congress.
